CHIKURIN NO FUJI, volume II-34

Fuji through a bamboo forest

"The pure lines of Fuji appear in the distance, contrasting with the straight or sloping bamboo trunks, sometimes down to the ground, with a suppleness that could be interpreted as a salute to the mountain; some, still young, are sheathed in leaves at various stages of growth, others, more advanced in their growth, rise or slope with great purity. Crowned with foliage, they form a noble group worthy of the sacred mountain. In Japan, bamboo is itself a sign of purity, and plays an important role in the Shinto cult, which considers the Mount Fuji like a divinity."
